As I’m writing, our friend, Karen is going “under the knife.” I know that’s an indelicate term, but for a year the doctors have been keeping an eye on a squamous cell area on her forehead. They finally decided it needs to be removed before it causes some real trouble. We’ve been amazed at her composure; maybe peace is a more descriptive word. Or trust.
They tell us it’s likely to be a four or five hour procedure and when it involves your face, it really gets your attention. Karen is a member of our prayer call that has met and prayed every day for about the last 300 days in a row. She is an inveterate prayer warrior but today the twenty-or-more prayer warriors who regularly gather are interceding for her. And she is the calmest of all of us.
We talked about that. She described the peace the Lord has given her. Though the outcome is unknown right now, she has a trust that amazes us. “I have good doctors,” she assures us, “but it’s the other Doctor in the room that I trust the most. Whatever outcome He determines, I’m ok with that.”
If you know Karen, it helps you understand. She marinates in the promises of God. She claims them as her own. They saturate her prayers. She searches for them, basks in them and applies them to her present journey. Right now she’s reading through more than one Bible, underlining promises. She told us that when she finishes that project she’s going to give the Bibles to her grandchildren as part of their heritage. Precious gift. I can hear their response: “These are the promises my grandma claimed. They got her through some tough times and I am going to claim them as my own.”
So please join us in interceding for Karen today. And don’t worry. She has total confidence that she’s in the hands of the Great Physician. And that trust has kind of rubbed off on the rest of us.
